Honestly, my husband's Chinese isn't very fluent.
Conversational stuff, he manages fine. But reading stories aloud to the kids — that's never been something he felt confident doing. Sometimes he skips a character he doesn't know. Sometimes the tones aren't quite right. Sometimes he's not sure himself as he goes.
The kids don't care.
What they care about is dad sitting down, opening the book, and going full performance mode. Dragon voice. Tiger voice. The evil witch in a completely unhinged funny voice that made both kids fall apart laughing — and then demand he do it again. And again.
You don't need perfect Chinese. You just need to sit down and open the book.

→ American history / nature science picture books — great for the night before a road trip. Read about where you're going, kids arrive curious. We read about Lincoln before DC. My daughter went straight to find his exhibit at the museum.
→ Short bedtime stories — five minutes, every night. Doesn't have to be much. Just keep going.
One book + one dad sitting down + two kids leaning in — that's the best Father's Day gift there is.
